Iraqi bodies

‘Iraqi Bodies’ is een fysieke en audiovisuele voorstelling over de sporen van migratie op het lichaam. Dansmaker Liza Sulaiman heeft in samenwerking met danser Ali Zanad onderzocht hoe drastisch veranderende texturen van veiligheid, landschappen, geschiedenis en culturele narratieven zich onderhuids nestelen tot een fragmentarische ervaring van de identiteit.

Reis af naar een poëtisch universum onder de Arabische teksten van schrijver Khazal Al-Majidi, waar het lichaam rouwt om een utopisch verleden en transformeert tot het dystopische landschap dat ooit thuis was. Waar heden, verleden en ver afstaande ruimtes samensmelten tot een onheilspellend schouwspel. Bewegend tussen hier en daar, tussen nu en toen.

In Iraqi Bodies wordt je geleid door de rouwgevoelens van kunstenaars van Irakese komaf. Maar het is een ode aan íeder lichaam dat gedwongen is om te vluchten en het vertrouwde achter zich te laten.

Iraqi Bodies is a physical and audiovisual performance about the traces of migration on the body. Dance maker Liza Sulaiman researched, in collaboration with dancer Ali Zanad, how drastically changing textures of safety, landscapes, history and cultural narratives nestle into a fragmentary sense of identity.

Travel to a poetic universe among the Arabic texts of writer Khazal Al-Majidi, where the body mourns an utopian past and morphs into the dystopian landscape that was once called home. Where present, past and spaces merge into an ominous spectacle. Moving between here and there, between now and then.

In Iraqi Bodies you are guided through the experiences of grief of artists of Iraqi descent. But it's an ode to all bodies forced to flee their homeland leaving the familiar behind.
