Als Delft Fringe Festival-team hebben we een spannend jaar achter de rug, resulterend in een prachtige erkenning: ons festival verwierf als een van de zes nieuwe festivals een plek in de meerjarige subsidieregeling van het Fonds Podiumkunsten. Dat wil zeggen dat we ons de afgelopen jaren duidelijk in de kijker hebben weten te spelen en dat het fonds de kwaliteit van ons festival, maar zeker ook die van onze makers onderschrijft.
Reden tot feest dus, maar helaas ook weer niet, want we leven tegelijkertijd mee met al die festivals en collega’s die geen of veel minder subsidie hebben gekregen. We zijn ons daardoor nu ook nóg meer bewust van onze verantwoordelijkheid, zowel naar onze makers toe als naar het veld, ofwel de festivals en theaters die hen een podium bieden. De komende jaren zullen we daarom extra inzetten op het delen van kennis met verschillende categorieën podiumkunstenprofessionals, van maker tot programmeur en van dramaturg tot technicus. Bijvoorbeeld via ons nieuwe, landelijke netwerkinitiatief Makers Monday.
Schreeuwend tekort
Ondertussen werken we natuurlijk ook heel hard aan onze komende festivaleditie. Na het recordaantal aanmeldingen van vorig jaar – dat voor onze kleine organisatie echt amper te behappen was – hebben we dit jaar de inschrijftijd van onze open call verkort van drie naar twee maanden. Dat heeft geleid tot een iets kleiner aantal aanmeldingen, 375 ten opzichte van 410 vorig jaar, maar relatief gezien betekent dat nog steeds een stijgende lijn en dat laat helaas ook zien dat er in Nederland nog steeds een schreeuwend tekort aan speelplekken voor jonge makers is. En tja, voor ons betekende het opnieuw ook een bijna onmogelijke opgave: want hoe selecteer je uit 375 veelbelovende producties en plannen slechts 28 makers en makerscollectieven, zijnde het maximum aantal waaraan wij dit jaar een festivalplek kunnen aanbieden?
Pungent, hilarious or just moving
For the first time, our programmers Tamara Griffioen and Sabine Krol worked together with a group of external professionals for this purpose, who, as ‘outside eyes’, helped decide not only who fits into our festival best, but also what kind of performances are needed in the Dutch theatre field. Practical reasons always play a role in that selection - unfortunately, having a hundred-strong choir perform in a giant aquarium is not one of our options - but our main task is to select the most surprising, appealing, stimulating, hilarious or even moving productions and production proposals from all those applications every year. And we think we have more than succeeded again this year, of course presenting a wide variety of genres, from dance to cabaret and from (family) theatre to a variety of musical styles. Remarkably, this year we also received quite a few applications from autodidacts, i.e. makers without official art training, as well as makers from the hip-hop scene. Furthermore, the trend that young performing artists want to tell very personal stories continues, but with one notable difference: whereas before we often saw productions based on a strongly socially critical vision, many stories now clearly express hope and a strong will to contribute to change, despite all the disasters and misery in the world.
From impressive historic buildings to state-of-the-art architecture
Each performance lasts between twenty and thirty minutes, so every reason to venture into a subject or art form you are not yet familiar with. And even if a performance turns out not to be quite your cup of tea, you can always marvel at the special location you find yourself in. Because although a number of familiar locations - such as Museum Prinsenhof Delft and Royal Delft - are closed this year due to renovations, we have once again managed to book no less than thirty surprising performance locations in Delft. From impressive historic buildings to state-of-the-art architecture. So we are very happy to be playing in the imposing Nieuwe Kerk for the second time, in audience favourites like de Molen and Stadsboerderij Rietveld, and to be opening our festival for the third year in a row in Theater De Veste. But we are also hugely looking forward to the performances in our new ‘breeding ground’ in het Kabeldistrict, with no fewer than five new playing venues in and around the Schiehallen. We are also looking forward to settling down in the Social Hub, where our festival heart is located this year and where we will organise an in-depth and festive fringe programme, including Fringe Talks, afterparties and our famous Drag Bingo.

This year, the Delft Fringe Festival will take place on and around Ascension Day and Whitsun. This will hopefully create even more opportunities for many of you to visit our festival. So grab that chance! Our makers, as they made abundantly clear at a recent ‘Maker's Day’, are ready. Ready to share their personal stories with you with an unstoppable drive, sometimes sensitive, sometimes raw, sometimes intimate, sometimes grand and grotesque, but always passionate. So immerse yourself, get away from all daily and worldly worries for a while, and get to know the new generation of theatre makers, choreographers, musicians, cabaret artists and performers. Because one thing is certain: the future is playing at the Delft Fringe Festival!
