Prometheus / Epimetheus

Een poëtische muziektheatervoorstelling over hoop en haar schaduwzijde. Twee broers zijn elkaars tegenbeeld, maar verliezen zich beiden in hun verlangen naar een vrouw die alles moet bezitten wat ze zelf niet hebben.

De introverte kunstenaar Prometheus gelooft iets grootser te kunnen creëren dan de goden zelf. Als een bezetene jaagt hij op de muze die steeds in zijn dromen verschijnt. Zijn broer, extraverte natuurfotograaf Epimetheus, snapt niet waarom iedere poging om heviger lief te hebben, zijn geliefde juist verder bij hem vandaan duwt. Pandora, de vrouw met de kruik, brengt zowel verrukking als onheil in het leven van de broers. Of weerspiegelt haar water slechts wat al in hen aanwezig was?

De mythe over Prometheus en zijn broer gaat over meer dan het brengen van het vuur. Het is een tragedie waarin verborgen en onderbewuste processen bewust worden. Een stuk waarin de Griekse mythe en autobiografische ervaringen van schrijver Max Bruins door elkaar lopen. Wie het innerlijk vuur draagt zal zijn schaduw tegenkomen. Wie in schaduw leeft, zal zich daar niet van bewust zijn tot hij het vuur heeft gezien.

Biografieën
Femke Hulsman (1996) studeerde in 2025 af aan de Dutch National Opera Academy, waar ze speelde in verschillende opera's met het Orkest van de 18e eeuw en het Residentie Orkest. Ze trad op in het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, De Vereeniging Nijmegen en De Nationale Opera.

Max Bruins (1997) studeerde af aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag (2020) en Codarts Rotterdam (2022). Hij zong rollen bij o.a. het Residentie Orkest, Opera2day, Barok Opera Amsterdam, B'Rock Orchestra, Holland Symfonie Orkest en Muziektheater Hollandsdiep.

Credits
Femke Hulsman en Max Simon Bruins voeren dit alles uit met mezzosopraan, tenor, piano en basgitaar. Prometheus en Epimetheus zingen werk van Schubert en Liszt; Femke zingt werk van vrouwelijke componisten zoals Strozzi en Von Bingen. Daarnaast zijn er gesproken monologen voor elk van de karakters.

The introverted artist Prometheus believes he can create something greater than the gods themselves. Like a madman, he chases the muse who repeatedly appears in his dreams. His brother, the extroverted nature photographer Epimetheus, cannot understand why every attempt to love his beloved more intensely only pushes her further away. Pandora, the woman with the jar, seems to bring both delight and calamity into the brothers' lives. Or does her water merely reflect what was already present within them?

The myth of Prometheus and his brother is about much more than the bringing of fire. It is a tragedy in which hidden and unconscious processes are brought to awareness. A work in which Greek myth and the autobiographical experiences of writer Max Bruins begin to intertwine. Whoever carries the inner fire will encounter his shadow. Whoever lives in shadow will not be aware of it until he has once seen the fire.*
